Guide to Performing Arts High Schools in Northern Virginia
If your child is passionate about music, especially violin or viola, a performing arts high school could provide the structure and peer environment they need to grow. Duke Ellington School of the Arts (Washington, D.C.)
Program Overview
Though located just across the river in Washington, D.C., Duke Ellington School of the Arts accepts applicants from Northern Virginia. This public magnet school has around 550 students across grades 9 through 12. Roughly half of the school day is dedicated to academic subjects, and the other half is spent in arts training.
The Instrumental Music Department includes a string program that offers large ensembles, chamber groups, solo coaching, and theory instruction.
Admissions and Auditions
Duke Ellington is highly competitive, with an overall acceptance rate of about 25 percent. Students must complete an online application through the My School DC lottery system and audition through Acceptd. The violin and viola auditions typically include a solo piece, scales, and sight-reading. An interview may also be required.
Woodbridge Senior High School – Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA)
Program Overview
Woodbridge Senior High School in Prince William County has been running its Center for the Fine and Performing Arts for over 30 years. The program enrolls approximately 400 students each year across eight disciplines, including orchestra. Students in the string program participate in full ensemble rehearsals, sectional work, and performances throughout the year.
The school offers AP Music Theory, chamber opportunities, and leadership positions within the orchestra.
Admissions and Auditions
CFPA holds auditions each winter, and students must be Prince William County residents. Audition requirements for strings typically include a solo work (often chosen from a list), scales, and sight-reading. The application process includes a written statement and recommendations. Acceptance rates vary by discipline, but the school receives far more applicants than available spots.
Colgan High School – Center for the Fine and Performing Arts
Program Overview
Colgan High School, also in Prince William County, houses another CFPA site and opened in 2016. Since then, it has grown to include more than 500 CFPA students across its disciplines. The orchestra program is one of the most active in the region, and the school frequently collaborates with community ensembles and hosts adjudicated festivals.
Students in the string program study a broad range of repertoire and participate in multiple concerts each year.

Admission requirements mirror those at Woodbridge. Students audition with a solo piece, perform scales, and complete sight-reading exercises. Enrollment is based on both audition performance and availability within each strand. Applicants must also submit a writing sample and academic records.
Falls Church High School – Academy of Fine Arts
Program Overview
Located in Fairfax County, Falls Church High School has developed an Academy of Fine Arts that offers pathways in music, theater, and visual arts. The music program includes instrumental instruction, ensemble work, and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration. While this academy is smaller than the CFPA programs, it provides a strong support system for students interested in the arts.
Enrollment and Application
Enrollment is open to Fairfax County students through an internal transfer and review process. There is not a formal audition for all students, but music applicants may be asked to demonstrate proficiency. Space is limited, and acceptance is based on a combination of academic record, teacher recommendations, and talent.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST)
Program Overview
While TJHSST is best known for its STEM curriculum, the school has an active and well-respected orchestra program. Many students in the music department pursue both science and the arts at a high level. The orchestra performs advanced classical repertoire and supports chamber music opportunities, solo performance nights, and external competitions.
Admissions and Music Placement
Admission to TJ is based on a rigorous academic selection process with no audition component for music. Once accepted, students may audition for orchestra placement. The school often attracts high-level violin and viola players who also participate in regional youth orchestras and summer festivals.

Each performing arts high school has its own process, but string auditions typically include a solo piece (such as a movement from a concerto or sonata), major and melodic minor scales, and a short sight-reading excerpt. Some programs may also ask for a brief interview, teacher recommendations, or a personal statement.
Students applying to multiple schools should start preparing early. Ideally, violinists and violists should have their repertoire selected by late fall and aim to have it performance-ready by winter.

Are Performing Arts High Schools Worth It?
For students who want to take music seriously, these schools offer consistent daily instruction and a peer group that is equally dedicated. Your child will benefit from access to experienced teachers, live performance opportunities, and specialized coursework that goes beyond what most general education schools can offer.
Still, performing arts high schools do not guarantee admission to college music programs or conservatories. Students must still audition successfully for undergraduate music schools, and private study continues to play a major role. Traditional high schools can also prepare students for conservatory life, especially when paired with strong outside instruction.
In other words, the decision should depend on your child’s goals, learning style, and level of commitment. Touring the schools, attending student concerts, and talking with faculty members will give you the best sense of whether one of these programs is right for your family.
