About Dr. Adelya Shagidullina
I have a broad range of experience, both as a professional violinist, violist, and educator. My formal education concluded with a doctorate from Temple University, where I worked in the music preparatory division as a teacher in addition to my educational responsibilities. I taught kids through adults, and helped students identify repertoire that fit their skill sets and tastes. I also studied violin and viola literature extensively, and I graduated with a deep knowledge of methods, techniques, and leveled repertoire.
As a performer, I’ve played solos and with ensembles at world-class venues like the Lincoln Center, the Kimmel Center, Carnegie Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall. I have also been an active member of the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, among other groups.
If you have any questions about my teaching style or background, please don’t hesitate to ask.
All Skill Levels are Welcome
I offer violin lessons in Springfield, VA to children, teens, and adults, and I love diversity and variety in my studio.
What Should Beginner Violinists Expect?
With beginners, I always cover basics like how to hold the instrument, how to use correct posture, and how to bow properly right at the beginning. The goal is for a beginning violinist/violist to start playing music they enjoy as soon as possible. We won’t progress any faster than the student is comfortable, and we routinely review fundamental concepts so that they become second nature.
We will also cover the basics of note reading (particularly in the treble clef), rhythm, note values, dynamic markings, and more, and I also keep lessons fun and engaging for my younger students (if a child doesn’t enjoy lessons, it’s even harder to make them practice).
How are Intermediate Lessons Different?
I’ve also helped many intermediate violinists, whether middle schoolers or adults, break through to the next level in their playing. At this stage, it may be important to review what you already know so we can identify gaps. Gaps in technique, musical knowledge, or even note reading can hold you back, and it’s important that we unlock your potential by mastering things like scales, arpeggios, and sight reading. Music choices can also be important; we want to choose pieces that will push your limits without feeling out of reach. Perhaps something like Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms or Humoresque by Dvorak would be a good fit - we will work together to make good choices.
I Also Work With Advanced Violinists of All Ages
I have experience teaching advanced violists, talented children and experienced adults alike. With younger or “gifted” students, I work hard to continually raise the ceiling on what they can accomplish. Things like repertoire selection, bowing technique (to facilitate even more challenging repertoire), or drills to ensure tonal accuracy on the fingerboard may be necessary. I also work with families to find performance opportunities, orchestra auditions, and competitions if the student would benefit from them.
With more mature violists, we often discuss the interpretation of musical literature – after all, technical accuracy doesn’t matter if the audience is bored. We can stage mock auditions, drill etudes and excerpts for auditions, discuss career strategy, and more.
My Studio Location
My studio is in the Landmark area of Alexandria, so my Springfield violin students often arrive via 395 S – it’s about a 10 minute drive. We can work together on a lesson time that works well with your work schedule or your child’s after-school availability. Some of my students drive north on 617, then head my way on Edsall road.
